David Molnar Reveals How to Turn Your Passion into a Career #525

2 December 2016 by

David Molnar is a world-class photographer renowned for his work, as well as his signature blue t-shirt. As well as that, he creates training products which help everyone to take better pictures.

Photography is essential in today’s world, and with everyone having cameras in their pockets, it’s also easier for anyone to do than ever before. Whether you have a DSLR or an iPhone, you can take quality images to be proud of when you use them right.

As a 9th grade freshman, at around 13 years old, he took a photography class at school. And he fell in love with it from the start. He was the kid who always had a camera with him, and he learned how to develop black and white and print pictures in a darkroom.

Photography was always something he thought would be a hobby for him, but he has ended up being one of the lucky ones to turn a passion into a career.

David shares with us how he managed to do just that. He also gives us an insight into how he created online photography training courses and the benefits he’s enjoyed since, such as having dedicated customers who buy all of his products.

Turning A Love Into A Job

People often think that for David, it was easy. They see that his career took off after having an image featured in a magazine, and assume that’s all it took.

However, what they don’t see is everything that built up to that moment. It was a long process that involved years of toiling and practicing. He was relentless in pursuing the things he wanted.

At 19 he wanted to photograph his favorite band. He asked everyone he knew whether they knew someone connected with them until he finally had success. A friend’s boss managed to get an opportunity shooting their whole concert in what turned out to be an epic night.

His pictures were then used by the band on T-shirts and in their album sleeve. He made a few hundred dollars, and it encouraged him to go forward.

Plus, the woman who gave him the intro is now his wife, with whom he has three children.

But that experience is what saw him through all those moments he was doing all manner of jobs for other photographers.

When he looks back over what he has achieved now, he can’t believe the things he’s done.

These include having photos feature in People magazine, The New York Times and USA Today. This is as well as having a photo printed on 20 million Pepsi and Mountain Dew cans and doing photo shoots for Google in New York and China.

He has jetted all over the world and worked with amazing people.

Being The Expert

He has now transitioned his career in order for him to give something back and help other photographers to pursue their dreams. For David, it isn’t all about taking amazing pictures.

His first online course was called iPhone Only Photography, in which he helped everyone to take better pictures simply using what they had in their pockets. Despite David’s collection of great cameras, they’re not always with him like his phone is.

He has helped thousands to create world-class photos with just their phones.

When you work in your business, especially for a number of years, you’re bound to become an expert at what you do without even realizing it. And that knowledge you have can benefit other people.

A lot of people can make an online course and make money from it. But that’s not the only benefit as it helps to establish yourself as an industry leader and prove to people that you really do know what you’re talking about. And when they’re looking to hire someone, they’re far more likely to hire an expert.

How Not To Create An Online Course

The trouble was, with his first course, he didn’t go about it the right way. He assumed people had a problem with wanting to take better pictures with their phone. Of course, he was right, but it wasn’t something that was keeping people up at night.

He spent two years writing a book and making the course to go along with it. But he found that people were not really willing to spend money. So instead, he should have validated whether people would actually want to pay for the information.

However, that’s something he has made sure to do in his subsequent courses.

Although he did end up making money from the course, it wasn’t enough to justify the two years he spent creating it. And it pales into insignificance in comparison to what his following courses managed to achieve.

Give People What They Want

With David’s next course, Master Your DSLR, he was solving a problem which was keeping people awake at night thinking about it. So he taught people how to take the pictures they wanted to take.

The difference between someone with an iPhone and a DSLR is that the person purchased the camera to take professional quality images. So they were having a far bigger problem.

He made the course in just two and a half weeks. And he had made sure people were willing to pay for it.

He pre-sold the course and then surveyed the people to find out what they were struggling most with. It provided him with invaluable information and made sure he was providing them with what they wanted. Plus they told him their problems in the language they used, which is highly useful when marketing the products.

The people who helped him were then also far more invested in the product. They recommended it to their friends and have since purchased his other courses.

He has retained customers because he served them well. And after all, it’s easier than always having to acquire new custom.

When David pre-sells a product, he is selling it with the promise that he will solve the problems they are having. And they help him to produce the content which is the most useful to them.

He gets a good response because people can see that he is genuinely in it for them.

And as a result of their feedback, he now has a wealth of things he wants to create to further help his customers.

Why Photography Is Still Important

We all know that a photograph tells a story of a thousand words. But they work more than ever today because many people are visually stimulated.

A photograph can make or break a conversion. An image is a difference between whether someone skips straight past your content, or whether their interest is piqued enough to click it.

It is beneficial to focus on quality. Most people may not be able to say what makes a photograph world-class. However, most people will be able to recognize a world-class photograph when they see it.

And it is those feeling which you want people to associate with your brand.

Not having the right equipment is not an excuse for bad quality images. And having the best equipment doesn’t mean you will take high-quality photographs. It’s all about how you use the tools which are at your disposal.
