Did You Realize You Were Marketing? #347

29 March 2016 by

So, today, let’s talk marketing. Now the reason I say this is because I was talking to a friend the other day and they explained that they don’t like marketing.

Now they run a business but they don’t like all the marketing stuff. It stresses them and it worries them.

But I talked to them a little bit about what they did. And then I had to explain that a lot of what she was doing is marketing.

So she didn’t have to stress because what she was worried about was change, was adding new things into the mix of developing new strategies.

No one likes change, we all hate it. So that was her problem. Now what she hadn’t realized, a lot of the things that she does automatically are marketing and once I explained that to her, she didn’t mind it so much because those she just never acquitted.

It’s what she did, she’s built a business, she started it from scratch and it’s just the same for you.

Ways to Market

So for example when you answer the phone, do you answer it in a particular manner, or do you just say, ‘Yeah, Jon here.’

Or do you answer it in a particular way or that if you answer it, ‘Hello, its Fire Protection Online. My name is Jon. How can I help you?’ that is a considered approach that is marketing.

When you send out your invoices, are they on nice letterhead? Are they just written down? Are they ordinary?

That is marketing. Oh by the way, assuming they are not on ordinary handwritten things, that will be bad. But that’s marketing.

When you visit a client, how do you dress? How do you present yourself? Do you give a presentation? Do you have a format, you know in a sales presentation or something like that.

If you do a survey, or an audit, or whatever it is you do, do you way have a way of presenting yourself? That is marketing.

Do you give out business cards? Do you go to networking events or to these breakfast things and people say, so what do you do and you explain? That is marketing.

We Are All Marketing

So what I’d like you to understand is that we’re all marketing. Now I’ve said before that in business every single aspect of business, other than asking for the order and taking the money, is marketing.

Those bits are selling. The rest of it is marketing. Everything before and everything after. So consider that. Don’t be scared.

Don’t say, ‘Oh I am not a sales person, oh I don’t do marketing, I don’t know anything about it.’ Yes you do. You’re brilliant. You are great.

You built a business from scratch. You are building a business, you are growing a business, you are fantastic. You are talented.

Look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself what you have done. And when you did that, you were marketing. Now you’ve got customers. They didn’t appear.

You did it via marketing. Did you design a leaflet? Did you have a leaflet design? If you had a leaflet design by somebody who came up with a clever design.

It was your brilliance that hired the person to do that leaflet. It was your idea to do that form of marketing. So don’t think you don’t know how to do it. All you need to do is occasionally add a few more bits and pieces.

You can find all of our email marketing resources listed here.

The Internet is Where It’s At

Now if you want an easier life, honestly the internet is where it’s at, it doesn’t matter what your business is, it will go online.

If it’s a local business, you think to yourself, ‘Oh I don’t want people ordering from Australia’, or if you are in little corner of England, ‘Oh, I don’t want people ordering from other end of the country.’

You can restrict your advertising, even if you use google AdWords or things like that, or Facebook ads. You can restrict your advertising to a little radius around your company, say 20 miles.

And it won’t be seen by anyone else. Clever, eh.

But the important thing is get online. Get yourself a website, don’t pay a web designer. Take my free course honestly, go to www.FreeMarketingCourse.co, it’s free.

It’s going to be like 5 minutes of your day every day. Just go through it and see what aspects, what steps are needed and think to yourself, ‘Oh I could do that.’

You can put a website together yourself. Easy, I can show you how. You can use social media, set up a strategy that takes you 10 minutes a day. Easy.

You can then develop a lead magnet, really easy. You can do email marketing. Again you set it and forget it.

I can show you how once you get sales then we can show you how to get referrals.

There ways to add little tweaks, bit by bit to your marketing system over time that make your life easy and get you customers and leads while you sleep or you are on holiday or you are doing more important work.

That’s how it works. So don’t stress. You are marketing, you are fantastic, I think you are great.
